RV parks and campgrounds are furnishing WiFi wireless Internet as a
necessary amenity. Design of an outdoor WiFi network differs
considerably from an indoor network designed to provide access to nearby
low-power computer users spread out over a relatively large area.
Outdoor networks require more robust, more powerful, equipment, and RV
park networks require special placement of the equipment that must take
into account the distance between access points, the 'grain' of the park
– orientation of the hookups
Several possible difficulties confront operating a WiFi network in an RV
park. The proximity of the end user to the access point – essentially a
power issue, which is overcome by installing high-power access points –
and line of sight placement of the access points.
Trees, terrain, and water all affect signal propagation.
RV's are constructed of fiberglass and metal and contain many potential
reflective surfaces, all of which degrade WiFi by
increasing signal distortion and 'multi-path' signal propagation. A
small park may require only a single access point in the office, but
full coverage of a larger park requires an enterprise approach, which
integrates wired and wireless broadband, VoIP telephony, and security
cameras.
Many RV parks and campgrounds are located in remote areas where there
may be no broadband Internet access. In these instances, satellite
networks are available.
