Most hotels now provide Internet access to
their guests. The choices of access modes are 1) wired, 2) wireless, or
3) a combination. In all cases Internet access must be purchased, a
system designed to cover the desired area, construction and
commissioning accomplished, and ongoing operation and customer service
conducted.
The low-end solution is to provide free access through a single wireless
access point located in a common area such as the lobby, coffee shop, or
bar. The drawbacks of these smaller deployments include the lack of
coverage outside of the single 'hot spot' and no customer service.
Larger deployments require more investment and a much higher quality of
customer service.
The 'free' model can be improved by contracting with an operator such as
MarineCOMS or
OpenRoads to construct the system and provide customer
service. In this instance, the hotel pays a monthly fee to the contract
operator.
Many hotels enter a co-location and profit share contract with an
operator who builds and operates a 'pay' system at their own risk.
Payment is via credit card or coupon purchased on site.
Apartment, condominiums, and cooperatives have the same choices as
hotels: 'Free' (paid by the community) or 'pay' operated by a
contractor. Private developments that select 'pay' model generally
negotiate a preferential rate for access.
